Monitoring of complex renal cysts: SOCRATIC |
Kidney cysts, which can affect up to one in three people after the age of 60, are often surgically removed when they present a complex form (Bosniak III and IV). However, experts recognize that many cysts are sometimes overtreated, that is, removed even if they are benign or not very aggressive. Recent guidelines from the Canadian Urological Association suggest active surveillance as an alternative to surgery in some cases, involving close patient follow-ups with delayed treatment in the absence of signs of progression.
This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of active surveillance as a medically equivalent alternative to surgery for complex Bosniak type III and IV cysts. Conducted at multiple centers in Canada, study compares medical outcomes and well-being of patients undergoing active surveillance versus those undergoing surgery
